LAC Platform & Taiwan's HIV Education Research at #IAS2019 Mexico City (S01 Ep12)

Our first special edition from the International AIDS Conference IAS2019 in Mexico City!

Each day we will summarize what’s hot and what’s not from the Conference floor and beyond, with our own unique insights into the state of the world’s response to global pandemics - particularly HIV and Ebola.

Joined by A Shot In The Arm Regular, Yvette Raphael, our cohost for these special Mexico podcasts, we explore the science in HIV treatment, prevention and testing with a wide range of guests from around the world.

In this episode, Yvette and I chat with LAC Platform and Mexico AIDS and LGBT leader, Anuar Cadena on the collapse of government support for local Mexico AIDS groups, and with Dr Stephane Ku, of Taiwan’s HIV Education and Research, on the innovations in PrEP implementation being piloted in in South East Asia.

We review the recently published articles in the New England of Medicine, that demonstrate clearly the limitations of the one vain-glorious 90:90:90 targets as the primary vehicle to end the AIDS epidemic. They make for sobering reading, even while the U=U movement continues to build steam. We realise that we need that the only truly effective strategy to combat AIDS is the three stool approach of testing, prevention and treatment.

We raise our solidarity with the people of Venezuela, who continue to face incredible odds in trying to access HIV and other medicines, as the government structures around them collapse.

And in a moment of fun, to balance the difficult news around us… Yvette and I debate the color of the hair of former IAS Chair, Linda Gail Bekker. Is it Blue or Purple? Answers on email or twitter please…

Let us know if you have any questions you want us to ask this week.

And in the meantime. Salud! You are a shot in the arm!
